Sedona bed and breakfast stays among the Red Rocks
Who visits Sedona and stays in bed and breakfasts there? You would be surprised. Goldie Hawn and her husband Kurt Russell are frequent visitors, as are Nicholas Cage, Al Pacino, Ted Danson, Nick Nolte and Rosie O’Donnell. Not to mention tens of thousands of visitors each and every year who pack into every Sedona B&B, lodge and inn. So what is the attraction? Sedona's most stunning and unique attraction is the range of red sandstone formations, aptly referred to as the Red Rocks of Sedona. These formations appear to glow with brilliant orange and red when lit by the rising or setting sun. The Red Rocks create a fabulous backdrop for everything from spiritual pursuits to the hundreds of hiking and mountain biking trails. Among the rock formations is one that some say closely resembles the character Snoopy, from the popular Peanuts comic strip, lying on top of his doghouse. Another nearby rock resembles Lucy, also from Peanuts. Other landmark rock formations include Bell Rock, Coffeepot Rock, Cathedral Rock, Courthouse Butte, Chimney Rock, the Mittens, the Cow Pies, and the Rabbit Ears, all for obvious reasons. Some Sedona bed and breakfast businesses are names after the buttes as a salute to the town’s attractions that draw tourists from all over the US.
The origin of the name “Sedona” has an interesting origin, which your Sedona bed and breakfast host is sure to tell you if you ask. It was named for Sedona Miller Schnelby (1877-1950), the wife of the city’s first postmaster, who was renowned for the kindness and industriousness. The name Schnelby also applies to an aspect of the buttes. The famous red rocks are formed by a layer of rock known as the Schnelby Hill Formation which is unique to the area. Sedona is quite simply inspiring and that is why people who are on vacation stay in Sedona bed and breakfasts looking for relaxation and inspiration. Growing up in Sedona is obviously inspiring too. Your Sedona B&B, lodge or inn will be quick to inform you of Sedona’s famous sons and daughters. These include the actress Samaire Armstrong, computer programmer and inventor of Gnutella peer-to-peer system Justin Frankel and jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan. The complaint most commonly heard by Sedona bed and breakfast owners are from visitors who say: “We don’t want to go! The vacation was too short!” Beware when you visit Sedona’s Red Rocks -- you may never leave!
