Newport

Rhode Island may be smallest state in the US but it has probably the highest density of bed and breakfast establishments than anywhere else in the union. Rhode Island also has the longest official name of any US state: "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations". Rhode Island is only 37 miles wide and 48 miles long yet its shoreline on Narragansett Bay in the Atlantic Ocean stretches for 400 miles. It will come as no surprise that one of Rhode Island's nicknames is "the Ocean State."  Rhode Island became famous as the playground of the rich and famous early in the 20th century. The legendary mansions of Newport overlook the ocean at Narragansett Bay. Many of these spectacular homes are open for tourists and offer an inside glimpse into the lives of America's erstwhile high society. The Breakers, the splendid Vanderbilt mansion built in 1895, is one of the most elegant private homes every built on the Newport shorefront. It is open to tourists for to view There are Rhode Island bed and breakfast establishments, inns and lodges located within walking distance of these famous mansions.

Rhode Island has more nicknames than any other state too, in addition to the official “Ocean State” sobriquet. Little Rhody refers to the state’s small size. Variations on this include "L'il Rhody," "Little Rhodie," and "Little Rhode." The Plantation State is in reference to the plantations mentioned in its official name. The Smallest State is an obvious reference to the small size of the state. Land of Roger Williams refers to the man who founded the Providence Plantation in 1636. Finally it is called the Southern Gateway of New England as a result of its position as the southernmost of the New England states with harbors suitable for ocean-going ships. There are many Rhode Island B&B lodges and inns with names relating to these nicknames.

Sailing is, of course, the most popular sport in the smallest state in the union and many Rhode Island bed and breakfast visitors are there to do just that. People come from all over the US and the world to enjoy this proud sport in some of the best sailing waters on the planet. With over 400 miles of coastline and more than 100 fresh and salt water beaches, Rhode Island and is widely known as the Sailing Capital of the World. The state was home to the Americas Cup for more than 50 years, as your Rhode Island bed and breakfast hosts will proudly tell you.
