Nebraska bed and breakfast stays for an authentic pioneer experience

Nebraska, a leading farm state, is known as the “Cornhusker State” and there are several Nebraska bed and breakfast stays, lodges and inns with names that relate to Nebraska’s farming culture and pioneer background. Nebraska is situated on the Great Plains of the US and got its name from a Native American (Chiwere) word that means "flat water" in reference to the Platte River which flows through the state.

Never make the mistake of simply traveling the highways through Nebraska merely in order to get somewhere else. There are many Nebraska bed and breakfast stops along the way. Stop and experience this fascinating US state.  Visitors can experience Nebraska’s pioneer past by visiting a restored pioneer homestead.  Bed and breakfast visitors are amazed at the beautiful scenery when following Highway 30 through the smallfarming towns spread along the Platte and there is no experience more reminiscent of the pioneer days than watching buffalo move across the grassy plains. Nebraska is central to US history so every Nebraska bed and breakfast visitor is encouraged to take the time to learn interesting historical facts about the state.

Nebraska is a major producer of grain including sorghum, wheat, and, of course, corn.  More varieties of grass for forage grow in this state than in any other place in the US. Being a grain and grass state, the Nebraska cattle and hog industries make Lexington and Dakota City two of the country’s largest meat-packing centers. Not all industry centers on farming. There is a diversified manufacturing sector including firms making electronic components, automotive accessories and pharmaceutical products. Nebraska has just about cornered the market in making mobile homes. Some Nebraska bed and breakfasts are in fact set up in mobile homes in addition to the usual B&B lodges and inns. Nebraska also has its share of traditional industries such as clothing, chemical and farm implements.

It is easy to visualize the Old West when wandering from bed and breakfast to bed and breakfast in Nebraska. This is the territory of the Pony Express, Boot Hill, the Overland Stage and the Oregon and Mormon Trails. This is the land of the mighty Missouri and where the Sioux and the Omaha flourished. Among the principal attractions are a recreated pioneer village at Minden and the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer Grand Island.  Lincoln is the capital city of Nebraska and Omaha, the state's largest city and only riverfront community, lies on the west bank of the Missouri. In Omaha bed and breakfast visitors enjoy visiting the Joslyn Art Museum and the Henry Doorly Zoo.
