The heart of the New England state of Massachusetts is the Boston metropolitan area where most Massachusetts bed and breakfast operations are located. Most of the Massachusetts population of 6.4 million live in that part of the state and most visitors to the state look for B&Bs lodges and inns in Boston. The eastern half of this relatively small state is mostly urban and suburban. The western part of Massachusetts is primarily rural although the population lives mainly in towns.
Massachusetts is historically significant in US history. The first battles of the American Revolution were fought in the towns of Concord and Lexington in Massachusetts. Many history buffs stay in bed and breakfasts in these towns while getting to grips with the history of the Civil War. Of course most people have heard of the Boston Tea Party which embodied the protest spirit of the pre-revolutionary period. In the 19th century Massachusetts led the slavery abolition drive. Massachusetts was (and is) home to the Kennedy family who were prominent in Massachusetts politics in the 20th century.
Tourism has become vital to the economy of the state. Massachusetts boasts numerous recreational areas and historical landmarks and as a result the Massachusetts bed and breakfast industry has gone from strength to strength. From fine art to whale watching, Massachusetts offers a quintessentially delightful New England vacation. Cape Cod has beaches, summer theaters, an artists' colony at Provincetown and many bed and breakfasts. The Berkshires, in the western part of the state has Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where many B&Bs, lodges and inns cater to music enthusiasts. Massachusetts is also home to art museums, the Clark Institute and Jacob's Pillow, the globally famous dance center. There are many bed and breakfasts catering to visitors to these famous drawcards.
Among the many other points of interest are Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Minute Man National Historical Park between Lexington and Concord, and Plimoth Plantation in Plymouth. Boston has a character and history all of its own. Boston sights including the Old North Church, Old State House, the USS Constitution, Faneuil Hall and the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum. Massachusetts has an outdoor life too The state extends from the heavily wooded Berkshire Mountains in the west to the beautiful beaches and impressive bluffs of Cape Cod to the east. Within these boundaries, outdoor activities embrace everything from hiking to sledging to whitewater rafting. Most B&B visitors just enjoy strolling the downtown streets and ethnic enclaves of Boston before returning to their welcoming Massachusetts bed and breakfast hosts.
