Iowa B&Bs welcome visitors to the Midwest

The number of bed and breakfast businesses in Iowa has increased dramatically in the past few years thanks to a rising interest in the “Hawkeye State” also known as the “Tall Corn State” as a wonderful vacation destination. Travelers from all over the United States are discovering that there is much more to Iowa than endless cornfields stretching to the horizon. Certainly farming and manufacturing are Iowa’s main industries but tourism is right behind them as an income earner. That is the main economic reason for the increase in B&Bs.

When Iowa became a state in 1846, its capital was Iowa City; the more centrally located Des Moines became the new capital in 1857. At that time, the state's present boundaries were also drawn.

There are bed and breakfast operations situated near all the main attractions including the birthplace of Herbert Hoover near West Branch with the library he bequeathed to the United States. B&Bs can be found near other major tourist attractions such as the Fort Dodge Historical Museum and the Effigy Mounds National monument, an ancient Indian burial site at Marquette. Visitors also frequent Fort and Stockade and of course thousands visitors descend on the annual Iowa State Fair in the Iowa State capital city Des Moines in August. Bed and breakfasts are well geared to handle the rush of visitors to the state capital for this great event each year.

There is plenty to see in Iowa from historic frontier forts to thriving modern cities. Iowa is the State that shows the scale of entrepreneurship that made the United States great. There are authentic well-established American farms and charming settlements at places such as Pella and the Amana Colonies. Visitors also flock to places where blockbuster movies were filmed including The Bridges of Madison County (Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep) and Field of Dreams (Kevin Costner and Ray Liotta). The Bridges of Madison County on its own was responsible for a number of bed and breakfasts opening at villages near the covered bridges to accommodate sightseers.

Visitors to Iowa state the following as reasons for liking to vacation there. Firstly it is spacious and peaceful. There are many enjoyable attractions even in the cities such as the Des Moines Arts Center and unique collections focusing on every type of historical facet of Iowa State from Scandinavian immigrants to farm toys. They mention super displays such as the Living History Farms in Des Moines which offers insight into the development of agriculture in Iowa over the past 300 years. Visitors like that fact that there are bed and breakfasts situated near the routes and particularly the start and finish of many nostalgic journeys by riverboat, train or country road that visitors undertake.

Background to Iowa State
Iowa, the 29th state of the United States, joined the Union on December 28, 1846. The state is named after the Native American Ioway people. The first capital was Iowa City but that changed in 1857 when the more centrally located Des Moines became the new capital. In that year the state's present boundaries were also drawn.

Although Iowa produces a tenth of the nation's food supply the value of Iowa's manufactured products is twice that of its agriculture. Major industries are food and products linked to food, mechanical goods, electrical equipment, printing and publishing and fabricated products.
With its fertile, rolling plains, Iowa is one of the leading agricultural areas of the United States. Farmers earn $10 billion per annum from crops and livestock and never forget that Iowa leads the nation in all corn, soybean, and hog sales and rates third in total livestock sales. One fifth of the nation's corn harvest is grown in Iowa. You will not be surprised to hear that the first tractor in the United States was built in Iowa and today the state has the largest traction-power manufacturing plant in the US.

In addition to agriculture Iowa's forests produce hardwood lumber. Mineral products produced in Iowa include cement, limestone, gravel, sand, gypsum and coal. The incredible economic power of this Midwestern state is also responsible for the burgeoning number of bed and breakfasts everywhere in Iowa. Business people often choose B&Bs as affordable places to stay over when doing business around the state.
